After months of delay, the long-awaited Renters’ Rights Bill is back in motion, with the House of Lords now deep in the committee stage.
Key Dates and Current Progress
The committee stage of the Bill officially began on 22nd April, with additional sessions scheduled for 24th April 28th April, and 6th May. The Government has allowed up to eight days for this phase, though that may be extended depending on how quickly progress is made.
What Happens During the Committee Stage?
This is where the Bill is dissected line by line. Every clause, schedule, and amendment are open for investigation and debate. The members of the committee can speak at length on any proposal, and any agreed changes are incorporated into a revised version of the Bill.
Next Steps: Report Stage and Third Reading
Once the committee stage is complete, the Bill will move into the report stage, followed by the third reading in the House of Lords. After that, it returns to the House of Commons, where MPs will consider any amendments made by the Lords.
What Does This Mean for Landlords?
The Bill aims to crack down on rogue landlords, while providing a fairer deal for renters. For ethical landlords, this represents an opportunity — not a threat.
By adapting early and understanding what’s ahead, landlords can position themselves as responsible, compliant, and tenant friendly.
